Valentine's Day History a Long One

The history of Valentine's Day is shrouded in mystery. The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine and the Valentine's day rituals that we are familiar with today come from both Christian and Roman traditions.
Some believe that Valentine was a priest who lived during the third century in Rome. Emperor Claudius II discovered that single men made better soldiers, so he outlawed marriage for men who were young enough to be drafted. Valentine defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius had him put to death.

There are also stories that Valentine wasn't performing marriages, but was helping Christians escape from prisons where they were being beaten and tortured.

A third legend suggests that Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" to a young girl who visited him while he was in prison. Before his death, some believe that he wrote her a letter, which he signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still in use today.

In ancient Rome, the middle of February marked the beginning of spring. It was celebrated with a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and to the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. Many believe that Valentine's day falls in mid February to coincide with this pagan festival, just like Christmas falls near the time of Yule, and Easter happens to be during the springtime festival of Beltane.

The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Valentine's Day didn't really catch on until around the seventeenth century, and by the middle of the eighteenth century it was a common practice to send small tokens of affection or handwritten notes to loved ones. By the end of the century, printed cards began to appear, and the Valentine's Day tradition really took off. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, 85 percent of which are purchased by women.

I need to exercise my what?!??

As we head into the fourth month of 2009, which resolutions did you manage to keep? Unlike most Americans, mine did not include the typical weight loss or quit smoking resolutions. Not that those aren't important! Instead I decided to put "have stronger orgasms" on my 2009 resolutions list.

Penn State dispelled this myth in a survey of members of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research, which includes psychologists, physicians and marriage therapists.

The therapists rated a range of time intervals for sexual intercourse, from penetration of the vagina by the penis until ejaculation, that they considered adequate, desirable, too short and too long. The therapists' responses revealed the following ranges of intercourse activity times:

Too short - 1-2 minutes
Adequate - 3-7 minutes
Desirable - 7-13 minutes
Too long - 10-30 minutes

A recent study shows the U.S. and China dominate sex industry. The company claims revenues for the world pornography industry hit an estimated $97 billion in 2006, overshadowing the revenues of the top technology companies such as Microsoft, Google, Yahoo! and Apple — combined!

Ropelato said the main reason appears to be the ability of people with higher incomes to afford computers, and those with higher incomes can also afford broadband Internet service.

Once you’ve located the muscle, the basic Kegel exercise is to simply breathe deeply and slowly while you alternately tighten and relax the vaginal muscle (as if you were stopping the flow of urine). Do this up to 200 times a day. Be sure, though, not to contract your stomach or back muscles, nor move or tighten your leg or buttock muscles.

Since no one knows you’re doing Kegels, they can be done just about anywhere anytime. So make them a daily habit. Do them while sitting at business meetings, working on the computer, watching TV, washing dishes, standing in line at the grocery or brushing your teeth. You can even do Kegals during sexual intercourse. The point is to “just do it.”

Impotence is a major warning sign of potential heart failure, according to a new study by top Austrian scientists.

"The penis is the antenna of the heart," said Dr Stephan Madersbacher, head of Urology at the Danube Hospital in Vienna.

"They have been welcoming us into their homes, the hospitality has been really great. Walking in this cold windy weather, though, has been really tough."

When asked if there were plans to arrest Gough on the final leg of his walk, a spokesman for Northern Constabulary said: "If there is a complaint against the person police will act accordingly."

In time for Valentine's day, National Geographic Channel's "Naked Science" series on Monday will reveal the ever illusive reasons why humans choose the mates they do.

National Geographic reports we are pushed around by the array of chemicals in our bodies and brains that have evolved over millions of years. That's what's doing a lot of the deciding when we choose mates.

National Geographic researchers tell us that we are driven not just to reproduce but to try to preserve our own particular genes and our bodies help that drive with a pack of instinctive and hormonal reactions. Not surprisingly, Rutgers University anthropologist Helen Fisher series of studies and found that men react to visual stimuli more than women.

She and other researchers also found that men most generally respond with desire to women with a waist-to-hips size ratio of seven-to-10, meaning, for example, that a woman with a 23 1/2-inch waistline and 35-inch hips would seem to be a good proportion, or a 28-inch waist would be attractive with 40-inch hips. The reason: it indicates easier pregnancies and birth.

"Scientists theorize that men are disproportionately attracted to women whose features indicate healthy hormonal levels," the National Geographic show says, "because that offers the promise of more easily reproducing healthy children."

Behavior patterns are hugely important to women when choosing mates, says Fisher, who did MRI studies of brain activity in people who are in love.

She says women's brains get more activity in the memory areas than men because women are mapping men's behavior. It also would explain all the phone chatter and re-telling among women friends about what their men did and did not do on the last date, she says. "Women need to create a memory trail," Fisher says.

Another factor in male/female response is fear and anxiety which heighten feelings of attraction and lust. That's why roller coasters or, even better, scary movies, are such good early dates.
